Case Study: Steel Road Barriers for Indooroopilly Roundabout

An important upgrade is underway at a major intersection in Indooroopilly, Brisbane, aimed at improving traffic flow, and improving safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Backed by both Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government, the Indooroopilly Roundabout Upgrade includes the construction of an overpass from Coonan Street over Moggill Road. This design aims to significantly reduce congestion and create a safer, more efficient traffic environment.

Construction is progressing, with completion expected in early 2024.

Managing a High-Traffic Work Zone

The Moggill Road and Coonan Street intersection is one of Brisbane’s busiest, handling more than 100,000 vehicles every day. With the amount of traffic expected to grow in the coming years, upgrading the existing intersection was critical.

With the daily traffic congestion and limited construction space, safety was an important priority. A strong barrier solution was needed to protect both motorists and workers on site, without creating further delays or complications.

Steel safety barriers were the preferred choice, offering a balance between strength, flexibility, and ease of installation. The steel SafeZone barrier system was chosen for this project due to its outstanding performance and versatility.

A Smarter Barrier for Modern Roadworks

WorkZone Solutions supplied SafeZone steel barriers for this project, a MASH TL-4 rated system, designed to deliver high-level containment with limited deflection.

With modern vehicles increasing in both size and weight, barrier systems must be capable of handling tougher impacts. The SafeZone system has been tested under MASH conditions using a 10t truck travelling at 90km/h with a 15-degree angle of impact. The result is a predictable, controlled deflection, meeting Austroad’s approval specification for use in 100km/h speed zones.

Each barrier unit is 5.8 meters long and designed for efficient deployment using a crane truck or Hiab, quickly connecting together, minimising disruption to traffic and keeping works moving on schedule.

For the Indooroopilly project, SafeZone was installed in extended runs along the intersection. The system’s bend options (5 and 10 degrees) allowed for smooth curves around tight bends, perfect for this complex roundabout layout.

Support from Start to Finish

WorkZone Solutions worked closely with the traffic engineering team and the installation crew to develop a layout that met all safety standards and design requirements. Our team also attended overnight installations to support correct placement and ensure compliance with TL3/TL4 standards.

This hands-on approach helped the contractor stay on schedule and maintain a high level of safety throughout the project.
