Case Study: Jersey Barriers with Anti-Gawk Screens and Shadecloth
Project Overview
As part of the ambitious Level Crossing Removal Project in Victoria, the North West Program Alliance (NWPA) team is hard at work eliminating level crossings in the Preston area.
This project focuses on the crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street, and Murray Road in Preston. Once these crossings are gone, a new rail line will be elevated above the roads on the Mernda line, transforming the space below into a vibrant community area complete with walking and cycling paths.
The project is set to wrap up in 2022.
Project Challenges
To get ready for the project, preparations are already in full swing in the area. Several sites have been set up, and car parks in the nearby streets have been closed to make room for equipment and machinery.
The car park at Preston station was shut down to the public back in November so that work crews could establish a site compound in that area.
Located right across from Preston Markets, the site needed a sturdy crash-rated barrier to ensure a safe perimeter, keeping the public protected and the site out of sight.
Our Solution
Our Fortress barrier team coordinated the delivery of the well-known Deltabloc crash barriers right to the site, complete with anti-gawking screens and shade cloth already attached.
This approach saved the installation crew a significant amount of time on-site and offered a seamless solution for the NWPA project team.
The Deltabloc barriers are crash-rated for speeds up to 100 km/h, ensuring dependable protection against breakthroughs for heavy vehicles while also providing a gentle impact response for smaller cars.
These concrete jersey barriers act as a safety barricade, minimising the chances of machinery and equipment colliding with pedestrians and vehicles in the surrounding public areas.
Equipped with mesh fence panels and shade cloth, these barriers serve a dual purpose as both a privacy and debris screen, keeping work activities out of sight from onlookers.
For this project, Workzone Solutions provided the barriers complete with anti-gawking screens and mesh; however, all components can be purchased separately and installed on-site or retrofitted to existing road barriers.
