Project Overview
The West Gate Tunnel stands out as one of Melbourne’s most significant infrastructure projects, aimed at offering a crucial alternative to the often-congested West Gate Bridge. With the support of the Victorian Government and Transurban, and executed by the CPBJH Joint Venture, this initiative will establish a second river crossing, enhance travel times, and help alleviate truck traffic on residential streets.
When piling works kicked off at the old Fish Market site in early 2019, the project team recognised the need for a robust, traffic-rated barrier system to secure the area and boost safety. They also sought a privacy solution to shield active work zones from view.
Our Solution
Workzone Solutions provided a large number of DB80 Deltabloc concrete barriers, all equipped with galvanised anti-gawk screens. These systems were strategically placed at crucial locations throughout the East Zone of the project, especially around piling areas and site entrances.
When shade cloth was added, the anti-gawk screens not only enhanced privacy and security but also helped minimise distractions for drivers. This arrangement kept the worksite safe and well-contained, all while maintaining a pleasant visual experience for those passing by.
Each DB80 barrier is certified for use on Victorian roads where vehicles can travel up to 100 km/h and complies with MASH TL-3 standards. The barriers connect easily with a simple coupling system and feature damping inserts to improve energy absorption during impacts. Their modular design allows for quick installation using crane operations with lengths of 2, 4, or 6 meters.
You can choose from straight or angled designs for the anti-gawk screens, which can be mounted on the top or side, and they can even be customised to fit various barrier sizes.
Extra Support: Portabooms
Workzone Solutions’ traffic team also supplied 17 Portaboom units to manage both pedestrian and vehicle access across the site. These portable boom gates helped streamline traffic control and improve safety around key construction areas.
