Case Study: DB80 Concrete Barriers for Avis Car Yard, Melbourne Airport
Project:
Security and safety barriers for car rental yard
Client:
Avis Australia
Location:
Melbourne Airport, Tullamarine VIC
Project Overview
Avis Australia runs a large car rental operation at Melbourne Airport, sharing the busy Tullamarine area with other vehicle hire companies. With a steady flow of hundreds of cars coming and going, it became clear that increasing on-site safety and securing the car yard’s perimeter was essential.
The client was looking for a strong barrier solution to help prevent accidents in a space where many drivers might not be familiar with the vehicles. Additionally, there was a need to clearly mark the boundaries between Avis’ fleet and those of other car rental operators in the same area.
Challenges on Site
The car yard’s location, right next to pedestrian walkways and busy traffic areas, made it crucial to set up a barrier system that could withstand high impacts while also keeping unauthorised vehicles at bay.
Avis was on the lookout for a barrier that could serve two roles; it needed to function as a traffic-rated safety system to lower the chances of collisions, and also serve as a physical security measure to deter vehicle theft or property damage. Plus, it had to be budget-friendly, with straightforward delivery and installation.
Our Solution
We provided Avis Australia with 500 lineal metres of DB80 Deltabloc concrete jersey barriers, giving their car park area an immediate and robust safety upgrade.
Each barrier stretches 6 metres long and is crafted to meet strict road safety standards. The DB80 system has been approved for use in areas with speeds up to 100km/h by VicRoads, RMS, TMR, and DPTI. Thanks to its low deflection upon impact, these barriers effectively protect both people and vehicles by absorbing force while staying structurally intact.
Made from high-strength precast concrete, the DB80 system is perfect for both long-term and temporary applications in car parks, construction sites, and transport depots. Avis chose this system not just for its safety features, but also because its lighter weight per metre helps cut down on delivery costs and speeds up installation with a truck-mounted crane.
All barriers were produced at our Sydney precast facility and delivered straight to the site for quick deployment.
Project Outcome
By installing the DB80 concrete barriers, Avis Australia improved both safety and security at one of the busiest car hire locations in the country. The barriers now provide clear separation between fleets, reduce the risk of uncontrolled vehicle movement, and serve as a strong deterrent to theft.
