Case Study: Concrete Barriers for Hambledon Road Upgrade, Blacktown
Project:
Hambledon Road Upgrade, Schofields & Quakers Hill, NSW
Client:
Jay & Lel Civil
Barrier System:
Deltabloc DB80 Concrete Crash Barriers
Project Overview
As part of a significant upgrade to the road infrastructure in Blacktown, Workzone Solutions has provided over a kilometre of concrete crash barriers to ensure the safety of both workers and pedestrians along the Hambledon Road project in Sydney’s western suburbs.
This initiative, supported by the NSW Government in collaboration with Blacktown City Council, is a $33 million effort aimed at transforming Hambledon Road from a two-lane rural route into a modern four-lane thoroughfare. Once the project is finished, it will enhance traffic flow, improve access to the Schofields railway station, and facilitate the development of up to 8,500 new homes in the nearby area.
These improvements are part of a larger strategy to expand the regional road network and accommodate the anticipated long-term population growth.
Site Conditions and Requirements
Civil contractor Jay & Lel was on the lookout for a robust and dependable crash barrier solution for the extensive upgrade corridor that stretches from Stanhope Parkway and Burdekin Road all the way to Schofields Road.
Given the considerable length of the site, the barriers had to be quick to set up, easy to move around, and designed with safety in mind. The main aim was to ensure the safety of both workers and the public from any potential dangers throughout the lengthy construction phase.
Our Solution
Workzone Solutions recently delivered an impressive 1,160 lineal metres of DB80 Deltabloc barriers for the project, which included a total of 290 concrete crash barriers. These barriers have received RMS approval for speeds of up to 100km/h, making them perfect for high-speed arterial roads and urban transport corridors.
Designed to minimise deflection upon impact, the DB80 system has been rigorously tested to endure a vehicle hitting it at 100km/h from a 15-degree angle, with a deflection of just 257mm. This feature ensures they provide a safe and effective solution for busy work zones where traffic is nearby.
Each unit weighs in at 520kg per metre, striking a balance between being light enough for quick crane installation and heavy enough to offer robust protection. Their precast concrete design boasts strong lifting points and a unique screwless coupling system with built-in damping elements, making them one of the most efficient and durable barrier systems available today.
Jay & Lel Civil managed to swiftly secure and deploy the barriers along the entire length of the site, enhancing safety in work zones during a hectic construction period.
Project Outcome
The Hambledon Road upgrade will unlock new housing opportunities, ease congestion in Western Sydney, and create a stronger connection between local roads and key public transport hubs. Once complete, it will support growth in the Schofields area and provide safer, smoother journeys for thousands of daily commuters.
Workzone Solutions played a key role in protecting workers, vehicles and residents throughout this vital project.
